Credit Risk Specialist- Assessment & Validation (1 Position)
REPORTING TO: Head of Credit Risk Management
JOB PURPOSE: Reporting to the Head of Credit Risk Management, the role holder will proactively manage risk by analyzing macroeconomic and sectoral factors, conducting stress tests and scenario analyses, and evaluating risk models to ensure their accuracy and reliability. This includes validating models to confirm compliance with regulatory standards and their effectiveness in estimating potential losses.
LOCATION: Kampala
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Regularly compile, analyze, and publish Key Credit Risk and Performance Indicators, performing monthly trend analyses to monitor portfolio health and inform strategic decisions.
- Conduct proactive assessments of macroeconomic trends and sector performance to identify emerging risks, advising the bank on potential impacts to performance and guiding business prioritization.
- Design and execute stress tests and scenario analyses to evaluate the resilience of risk models under various adverse conditions, providing recommendations to senior management for mitigating actions.
- Validate assumptions, formulas, and methodologies in the development of credit risk models (e.g., corporate rating models, retail scoring models), and participate in their regular improvement to enhance predictive accuracy and mitigate potential losses.
- Assess the quality of the overall loan portfolio through trend analyses and other analytical risk indicators, aiming to improve credit collections and recoveries.
- Benchmark quantitative and qualitative risk appetite and tolerances, as well as limit structures, against industry standards and regulatory expectations, while considering the bank’s business strategies.
- Validate compliance with regulatory capital estimation processes (Standardized and Internal Rating-Based approaches) and statutory loan loss provisioning standards to ensure adherence to applicable laws and regulations.
- Develop and design relevant reporting tools and templates to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of risk reporting processes.
- Perform regular portfolio surveillance, including earnings review and credit market spreads, to identify and address potential risks proactively.
- Analyze performance qualitatively and quantitatively, detecting issues or deviations, and recommending actions to mitigate losses and enhance performance and profitability.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- An undergraduate degree in mathematics, statistics, economics, finance, or a related field.
- Professional Experience: At least 4 years of working experience in a financial institution, preferably in credit risk analysis or a related role.
- Certifications: Possession of certifications such as CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst), FRM (Financial Risk Manager), or other relevant qualifications is advantageous.
- Research Training: Formal research training to support data analysis and model validation.
- Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with industry-specific databases and data sets for risk analysis.
- Financial & Credit Risk Management: In-depth understanding of credit risk assessment, portfolio management, and loss estimation techniques.
- Macroeconomics & Sectoral Analysis: Knowledge of macroeconomic indicators and sector-specific trends to identify emerging risks.
- Regulatory Standards: Familiarity with regulatory frameworks such as Basel III, IFRS 9, and local financial regulations.
- Data Analysis & Modeling: Understanding of data modeling, data cleansing, and enrichment techniques.
- Statistical Methodologies: Knowledge of statistical methods like regression analysis, time-series analysis, and multivariate testing.
- Risk Assessment Tools: Awareness of industry-specific databases and data sets for risk analysis.
- Analytical & Quantitative Skills: Ability to interpret complex data and draw insights related to credit risk
- Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in data analysis tools and software, such as Excel, SQL, and statistical software (e.g., R or Python).
- Data Visualization: Ability to produce clear graphical representations and data visualizations to communicate findings effectively.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous in data analysis and reporting to ensure accuracy.
- Communication Skills: Effective verbal and written communication to present complex data in understandable terms to various stakeholders.
- Problem-Solving Abilities: Adept at identifying potential issues and developing practical solutions.
- Organizational Skills: Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
