Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism Gen. Kahinda Otafiire has urged the people of Isingiro District to desist from the practice of keeping cash in their homes, and instead utilize the newly opened dfcu Bank in the district to boost their economic activities.

The Minister who officiated as Guest of Honour during the launch of the first bank in the district said banks are there to help people develop their growth potential."Unfortunately you people prefer to walk around with cash in your pockets instead of banking it. What if you get arrested on the way or thieves waylay you? I urge you to make use of the products and services of this bank to boost your economic activity", he said.

He decried the poor saving culture among Ugandans adding that it is the reason most people are poor.“Even with the commendable growth in Uganda, our poor savings culture amongst our population remains a major challenge to both government and banks. A lot of Ugandans still save outside streamline financial institutions which is not healthy for the economy. People should learn to save to build homes, for household needs, school fees, small business investments and consumption”, he said.

dfcu Bank Director Elly Karuhanga said the bank decided to open up a branch in Isingiro because of the huge growth potential especially in the areas of agricultural sector.He applauded government for availing 60 billion shilling to be channelled through local banks, to develop agriculture in the country.
